Abstract

The Žiarska kotlina Basin (ZKB) is situated in the Internal Western Carpathians and belongs to the Neogene Intramontane Basins. The origin of the ZKB is connected with the Central Slovak Fault System. The first detected tectonic event was the Early Badenian compression oriented in WNW–ESE direction. During the Early–Middle Sarmatian the compressional regime was changed to the transpression. The compression axis was oriented in NNE–SSW to NE–SW direction, extension axis was perpendicular to compression. The transtension regime operated in the Late Miocene. The compression axis was oriented in NNW–SSE direction. During this time transtension was alternated by extension oriented in WNW–ESE direction. Post-Pliocene tectonic regime is characterized by extension oriented in NE–SW to E–W direction.
